What is A TENS machine?

TENS, or Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, is a drug-free method of pain relief commonly used during labour. It works by delivering gentle electrical pulses through the skin to the spinal cord and brain, helping to reduce pain signals and promote natural endorphin release.

A TENS machine (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) uses small electrodes placed on the skin to deliver gentle electrical pulses. These pulses work in two ways:

  1. Blocking pain signals – the stimulation helps reduce the messages of pain travelling from the nerves to the spinal cord and brain.
  2. Boosting natural pain relief – it encourages the body to release endorphins, the body’s own pain-relieving hormones.

For labour, many women find TENS most effective when started early in labour and used consistently as contractions build. It is safe, non-invasive, and drug-free.

Yes — TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) is considered a safe, drug-free method of pain relief when used as directed. It has been widely used during labour for many years and has no known harmful effects on you or your baby.

Some women may experience mild skin irritation from the electrodes, but this usually resolves once the pads are removed. TENS should not be used in certain situations, such as if you have a pacemaker, epilepsy, or specific medical conditions — always check with your healthcare provider if you are unsure.

  1. Start Early
Place the electrodes on your lower back at the very beginning of labour or as soon as contractions begin. TENS is most effective when started early and used consistently.
  2. Correct Electrode Placement
Four pads are usually applied to the lower back — two on either side of the spine, just below the bra line, and two lower down near the sacrum. Your hire kit will include clear placement instructions.
  3. Adjust the Settings
Begin with a low intensity and gradually increase to a comfortable, tingling sensation. The aim is to reduce pain, not cause discomfort.
  4. Use the Boost Button
During contractions, press the “boost” button for stronger pulses. Release the button between contractions to return to the gentler setting.
  5. Stay Mobile
TENS allows you to remain upright and active, which can help labour progress. You can walk, change positions, or use it alongside other pain-relief methods.
  6. Keep It On
For best results, keep the machine running continuously once labour has started.

For labour, it’s best to use an obstetric or maternity-specific TENS machine. These units are designed with features that make them safe and practical for childbirth, such as:

  • Boost button – for extra pain relief during contractions
  • Easy-to-use controls – so you or your birth partner can adjust settings quickly
  • Large electrode pads – to cover the lower back area effectively

Lightweight and portable design – so you can stay mobile during labour

At Physiozest, we hire out maternity TENS machines that meet these requirements, ensuring you have the right device for safe and effective use during labour.
