What is a Pelvic Floor Assessment
At Physiozest, we offer internal (vaginal) examinations to accurately assess the pelvic floor muscles, the group of muscles that support the bladder, bowel and uterus at the base of the pelvis.
A vaginal examination allows your physiotherapist to assess for:
- Scar tissue and wound healing
- Pelvic floor muscle tone
- Pelvic floor strength and function
- Signs of pelvic organ prolapse
These assessments may be recommended to investigate specific symptoms or as part of routine pre- and postnatal care. Following your assessment, we will work with you to create an individualised treatment plan tailored to your needs and goals.
What is Exercise Prescription for Pelvic Floor
After your initial assessment, a Women’s Health Physiotherapist can prescribe pelvic floor–specific exercises tailored to your needs. They may also be prescribed to optimise pelvic floor function before and after pregnancy, following hysterectomy, or alongside musculoskeletal rehabilitation.
Pelvic floor exercises can help to:
- Strengthen the muscles
- Improve endurance
- Enhance coordination
- Lengthen and relax when needed
Diastasis Rectus Abdominis (DRA)
Diastasis rectus abdominis (DRA), or abdominal separation, is the widening of the stomach muscles along the midline. It is commonly seen during pregnancy and in the postpartum period.
Our Women’s Health Physiotherapists can assess the degree of separation, provide tailored exercises, and recommend supportive products such as abdominal support belts if appropriate. A guided or home-based exercise program is encouraged to achieve the best outcomes.
Pessary Fitting
A pessary is a medical grade silicone device that is inserted into the vagina to support the pelvic organs and can be highly effective in reducing symptoms of prolapse and incontinence.
At Physiozest, we use ProFem pessaries which are soft, flexible, and hypoallergenic material. Pessaries are available in a range of shapes and sizes, allowing your physiotherapist to select the most suitable option for your individual needs.
Blocked Ducts and Mastitis Treatment
The main goal in treating blocked ducts and mastitis is to clear the blockage. At Physiozest, we use therapeutic ultrasound combined with gentle massage to improve circulation, reduce inflammation, and relieve pain.
Early treatment is important and may require 1–3 sessions. If you suspect mastitis, we recommend also seeing your GP, as antibiotics may be necessary in some cases.
